Exclamation Testing of Luxim.com Plasma Engine

Luxim.com Plasma Light Engine DIY Thread

We have a pre-recorded video of the first video of this on the garage door. This light source is insane! I was just watching it in the daytime WITHOUT drawing the curtains!

We are now finished retrofitting an older projector to test out the quality of this new bulb!!! We are so excited to see what this can have to offer for our community. Picture it now, an awesome DIY design custom enclosures and a bulb that will last 30k hours? I don't know about you but that sounds insane! Keep checking back I am making Bruce take videos of the retrofit and to keep you all involved each step.

We hope this testing from Luxim and being able to adapt our projectors for this awesome light source goes awesome! We are going to be sending a setup to them also to be designed for special purposes. We hope that www.diyprojectorkits.com can come out on top with todays awesome technologies for the DIY Projector market.

I will be making a test projector from PJ1 which has been sitting for a few years. I will be using a 450 lens in this test rig.
Once we have all the distances and tests done I can design this into a new enclosure.
I have measured the size of the point light of this to be 3mm in diameter. this is so far the smallest point light source we have tried.I expect some really good results because of the intense amount of light at that point.

If this would work, how much would one of these units cost? How long would it last and how much would it cost to replace bulb (do you have to do that?).

I think when Tescorp and I were talking about it a few weeks ago he said something like 1 million dollars..

BUT it would last 45+ thousand hours....

Kidding on the price of course....
Tescorp has yet to do a price deal with them. It will be coming soon.

Sorry about the crude lines.

But I am interested in some measurements

A to B (center of light source) ______
B to C ( the otherside ) ______
F to G if not the same as B to C ______
D to E Base bottom to light center ______

Also during the upstream video you where placing your hand around the top and sides to feel for heat. How much heat was being output?

Another question pops up You mentioned that You thought it may not need a rear fresnel. Can you expand your comment on this. I had notice you said it after you placed the fresnel in front of the light cone?

Another question

When you turned it off did the fans turn off at the same time.
How loud are the fans
After turning it off How soon can you turn it back on

Kinda makes me think of the starwars plasma canon

I know fans are replaceable. What I am asking is are the Fans controlled to run after the system switch is turned off. If I get one of these I plan to mod it to my liking or needs.

Can we get a picture of where the cable harness goes into the PSU and where it goes into the plasma generator.

Fans are independent of the engine, they are on one switch. I turn them on first, then I power up the light engine. The fan is a standard 12v d/v 120mm fan so it is whisper quiet.
I can turn the engine on right away, there is no re-strike time. Actually the engine runs quite cool compared to what we are used to so the fan can turn off when the engine is turned off. there is going to be quite the difference in the way we cool these Plasma projectors I have designed over the past few days. we wont have to drag cool air over the panel anymore because of the way this engine runs, we will only need to cool it and the PSU that drives it. Keep an eye out for the V450 and Z450 designs for this Plasma engine, They will be in THE VAULT section of the forums.

Default Re: Testing of Luxim.com Plasma Engine

In post #7 a question about the fresnel was asked. I thought I may not need one but after further study of the light output and shape I found this engine produces a 3mm dia point of light a few mm in front of the condensor housed in the nose cone. the actual "bulb" sits behind this condensor. This means we have a very small round point of light for the collimator fresnel to focus on. This is exactly what we need a 3mm point of light not a 30mm arc chamber, this means the image will be uniformally bright because we have a point of light not a "line of light" jumping two electrodes.
also this engine runs cool where I can handle the entire unit and the heat sink does not get uncomfortable to touch. I would never think of handling a 400w MH in its mogul while it is on because of the heat and high voltage required to operate the bulb, I would either get burned or zapped or both.
This is so much safer then a MH set up.

Actually I have a delema,
Choice 1
I have Projector # 1 here collecting dust. It is the original "dog coffin" style set up for a 330 triplet. I was thinking of doing a quick retrofit with a 450 quad, 550 field fresnel and then mod the back for the plasma engine. It would be ugly but it would work.
Choice 2
I have a reject Pro-V case here and I could gut Projector # 1 for its parts (panel, controller, 220 fres. ) and fit them in to this case with the plasma and 450 Quad. Would look a whole lot nicer but it would still be rigged.
Choice 3
Build a new V450 enclosure designed for the Plasma engine and 450 Quad projection lens.
I need to do it quick though, I cant wait to see how well this works and with the point light I think it will work well! I will be building these with the cassette design in mind so they will inter change just like the panels and fresnels.
